My eyes were drawn to this piece, due to its relation to nature and how realistic it showed the trees and capture the feel of winter using monochromatic tones. This landscape seemed authentic as if I can picture it right in front of me through a window, yet at the same time I kind of had the sense of an illustrative fantasy through the image (like an oriental Narnia or something similar). The setting itself had a peaceful and serene quality with the lightly snow-coated trees and plants, and a subtly washed out background looking like fog or perhaps water or sky. Its calligraphic brushwork looked very close to the intricate features of a real bamboo tree; the leaves were were very dynamic and sharp like knives and the trunks had accurately marked indents. The drawing itself looked very fragile and delicate as if it was an ancestral heirloom of very high importance, maybe with standards as high as Imperial Chinese Art.

  1. I agree with your vision of being able to see this out of a window. I really do enjoy the calligraphic style brush work. Illustrative fantasy is a good way to describe this piece.

  2. It does look quite realistic within the bamboo.
Definitely very precise, dry brush work with washes in the background.
Was this done for royalty? Within a painting school?
illustrative fantasy is a good way to describe this, like you said.

  3. Upon first glance, Bamboo in Snow looks like a perfectly-focused black and white photographic print. This is one feature that grabbed my attention while scrolling through our images, and this is one adjective that definitely applies to this piece: photographic. It is meticulously rendered so that it looks exactly like you noted, like it is out of your window. This is done with hyper-realistic execution, which is impressively uncharacteristic of Chinese art.
