this piece has extensive brushwork giving detailed focal guide upward through the painting. starting at the bottom corner starts the path up a hill. hatch marks detailing every plant and stone along the way. Going up the path there's a tree similiar in style to other chienese paintings through its history. this piece it self has comon traits of the great masters of chinese painting with the stepp mountains, stairs cut into the mountain leading to a house. back to the painting, the path curves in direction the back to an angular asension into the mountain. His use of nagative space brings the eye back into the middle of the painting. every part of the painting is thoughtfully planned out
In addition to the adjectives you used to describe this piece I would also say depth and lonely. I agree there is an amazing amount of detail in this piece although I get a sense of loneliness and overwhelming. It seems like the piece stays at a more neutral grey tone. There aren't very many darks in the piece (other than the small bits of shadows) that stand out when you look at it from a far. For me the darker pine trees in the upper left stand out. It is an interesting pathway how it curves across the painting. I wonder if there is a purpose for this pathway leading across the foreground of the pathway and disappearing in the center of the painting?
